Behind The Seams: How K4 Packs Are Built to Last

Behind The Seams: How K4 Packs Are Built to Last

After 50+ days in the field, 300+ miles hiked, and 4000+ pounds carried, we take an unfiltered look at the condition of Justin's K4 5000 Pack System.

Exo Mtn Gear's Owner & Designer, Steve Speck, cuts the pack open to show "behind the seams" and explain how K4 is built for performance and long-term durability.

As Steve mentions in the video, we are proud to offer a lifetime guarantee on our packs, but we build our packs so that any warranty work shouldn't be needed.

This is possible because of the high-quality materials we use, combined with careful design that is the result of extensive experience we have gained from decades of hunting, more than a decade of building packs, and the tens-of-thousands of packs that our customers have used and abused in the field.

While the very first Exo pack that we solid in 2014 was built well, we learned things that made the next-generation, K2 (2016), even better. When we launched K3 in 2019, it was even more refined, well-designed, and longer-lasting.

Now, being 3+ years into the release of K4 and having thousands upon thousands of those packs out in the wild, we can truly say that they are built extremely well and that the number of issues we have seen with K4 is as minimal as could ever be expected.

FROM THE FIELD

More often than not, Justin is behind the camera, not in front of it. But here are some images of his pack and the adventures he has taken it on in the past year, including while hunting and filming for The Experience Project HUNT series.

Justin's gear loadout heading into the first of his three Alaska hunts in the fall of 2024

Justin's caribou bull in Alaska, which you can watch on Episode 1 of The Experience Project HUNT Series

After killing his bull, Justin carried camp, filming gear, meat, and the antlers as we continued hunting — and ended-up killing Steve's bull later that night

On his next Alaska hunt, Justin killed this gorgeous 62" bull moose. This was the 4th bull that the guys killed that week.

There are hard hunts and heavy packouts, but not much compares to killing and packing 4 moose in a week.

On his 3rd trip to Alaska in the fall of 2024, Justin filmed Make & Jake as they doubled-up on gorgeous mountain goats

In addition to carry camp and film gear, Justin helped pack out all of the meat and full hides from both goats, which the guys did in a single trip as they raced against Alaska weather that would soon make the river impassable

Back home in Idaho, Justin took his son, Jackson, out for a Mule Deer hunt, which resulted in another heavy packout

Justin spent some time searching for bucks in cold, snowy, late-season conditions

When snow gave way to the green of spring, it was time to start scooping up sheds and searching for bears

Justin didn't know it at the time, but his heavy Spring bear packout would be the final load that his K4 5000 Pack System would see before Steve decided we should cut it up for this "Behind the Seams" video
